New Year’s Day Running
Two years ago, on January 1, 2010, I ran my first double-digit run of 10 miles. I thought it was about the most I could do, and I could not at the time imagine running much farther than that.

Today, January 1, 2012, I ran 15.87. I would like to greet the next new year by running 20.13. Just an idea.

Today’s run was great. Beautiful Texas Winter weather – brilliant blue skies, warm sunlight, cool air and a north wind. I added 4 miles to the early part of the run by taking a long detour loop, putting myself at higher mileage when I hit the hills of Highland Village. It was a workout, but a good one. I was pretty happy with my splits – my pace was fairly consistent and appropriately slow for the long run day. I took two short Clif Shot breaks, and I walked through them. One at mile 5 and one at mile 10.

Last year, I ran 1,179 miles, including three marathons and a half marathon. For most of the year, I ran 4 or 5 times per week. I started to see an improvement in my marathon time, from 5:34 to 4:58. The 5:34 was my second marathon, and it was a disappointing increase in my time from my first marathon (5:18). It was a very humbling experience. I bonked in that race. I did not bonk in the next two, and I don’t see any reason to in the future.

My goals this year are to (1) get better at running, (2) get into better overall physical shape and (3) inspire and help others do the same. To accomplish #1 and #2, I’m adding other kinds of strength training workouts and analyzing and re-analyzing my diet. The whole diet thing has been a weird journey – I’ll detail that out at a later date. I am looking forward to solid incremental progress over the 5 (or maybe 6) marathons I am planning to run in 2012. It may be an ambitious plan, but each time I run a marathon I get more inspired to do better on the next one. Also, I want my 50th birthday year to be memorable from a goal-setting standpoint.

I plan to write some posts about my journey over the last 3 or 4 years. This year is off to a great start. I hope your 2012 is amazing. Give me a shout if you want to run some time…
